Claudia Bennett Obituary

Claudia Lynn Fink Bennett, 65, of California, PA, died Thursday, May 16, 2024. She was born April 7, 1959, in Lakewood, OH, a daughter of Judith Pearl (Woods) Fink and the late Gerald Howard Fink. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gregory (Linda) Fink.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 41 years, William Kimbell Bennett; children, Alexandra (Michael) Herman, Katherine (David) Safin, Victoria (Joseph) Seaman, Gavin (Miranda) Bennett, and stepchildren Mark (Elaine) Bennett, Ian (Bridget) Bennett, Michael Bennett, and Barbara Bennett; sisters, Darla (Scott) Dellana, and Karin (Aaron) Thomas and one brother, Andrew Warren (Kristi Lawrence). Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Helena and Patrick Bennett, Lillian and Andrew Safin, Parker Seaman, Sutton, Roland, Cecelia, and Millicent Bennett, and Kieran Bennett. In addition, the family awaits the arrival of the twelfth grandchild, baby girl Bennett.

Claudia's life was a testament to her selflessness and dedication to enriching the lives of others. As a journalist, librarian, and school teacher, she sought ways to improve her community. Her passion for early childhood learning, particularly children's literacy, was evident in her pursuits. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from California Univerity of Pennsylvania and a Master of Library Science from Clarion University. Beyond her professional endeavors, she volunteered countless hours as a Girl Scout troop leader, school yearbook editor, high school musical producer, public library board member, and PTA member. Through these commitments, she cultivated enduring friendships that enriched her life.

Claudia's talents extended beyond her professional and volunteer work. She used her remarkable needlecraft skills to stitch crewel embroidery work for her grandchildren. Her ability to mend clothes and stuffed animals spoke to her nurturing character. Her camera was always nearby so she could be ready to capture candid moments and family portraits. Claudia also expertly cared for a vast collection of houseplants and shared her wisdom on plant care with those around her.

Claudia found her greatest joy in her family. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she cherished moments spent baking cookies, playing board games, and reading books with them. Whenever her grandkids had sporting events, dance recitals, or musical performances, you could find her in the audience, cheering them on with pride. Family vacations to the beach were always a special highlight each year.

Claudia spent several decades renovating and restoring the turn-of-the-century farmhouse she shared with William and their children. It was a place of simple joys, where she found solace in planting flowers, birdwatching, and hosting family gatherings. It was in this treasured home that she peacefully passed away, surrounded by the love of her family, just ten months after being diagnosed with leukemia.

In honor of Claudia's memory, she requested that those who survived her continue her legacy of giving. She specifically encouraged eligible individuals to donate blood and platelets, recognizing the life-saving effect of such contributions. Additionally, she suggested making monetary donations to organizations close to her, including the University of New Mexico Foundation (www.unmfund.org), AHN West Penn Hospital, and the California Public Library (100 Wood Street, California, PA 15419). Claudia's legacy of kindness and generosity will live on through the lives she touched and the causes she championed.
