Reverend Norman Charles Hunt, 82, of Washington, PA, formerly of California, PA, died peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2017.

 

He was born Tuesday, July 3, 1934, in Washington, PA, the son of the late Charles and Anne (Gilbert) Hunt.

 

Norman was a 1956 graduate of W&J with a major in English and a minor in Greek.  He did graduate work at UConn where he taught English.  He then went to Western Theological Seminary, now the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary where he received a scholarship as chapel organist.  He was ordained at the First Christian Church in Washington, PA on May 25, 1958.

 

He began his ministry in Greene County, serving three small churches in Rogersville, Holbrook and Wind Ridge, then moved to New Kensington in 1961 serving the First Christian Church.  In 1965, he moved to California, PA serving both the First Christian Church (California)  and the Phillipsburg Christian Church.  Under his leadership, those two churches merged in 1966, becoming the United Christian Church.  In 1973 he moved to the Central Christian Church in Uniontown, returning to California in 1979 and serving here until his retirement on June 18, 2000.

 

Since his retirement Rev. Hunt had served as interim for varying periods of time at Lone Pine Christian Church, Carmichaels Christian Church, Republic Christian Church, Mt. Lebanon Christian Church, First Christian of Washington and Canonsburg Christian Church in addition to filling the pulpit for various other churches when needed.

 

He has touched the lives of young people in the region through his many years of support of Camp Laurelview.  He was on the original search committee to purchase the property and served many years as Director of Junior Camp and in later years as Keynote Speaker.  He served as Moderator for the Region and served as co-chair for the Region’s Capital Campaign, an effort to raise $750,000 to be used for various regional programs. Rev. Hunt also chaired the year-long California Susquetennial Celebration.

 

Always busy, Norman served on the Board of Directors for many organizations including the Carrie Hedrick Seay Memorial Home-Somerset, the Thomas Campbell Christian Center, the Chautauqua Assn., Disciples of Christ, Center in the Woods and the Cal Ed Federal Credit Union.  He formed the California Community Choir in 1985 and served as its director.  He was the Past President of the Kiwanis Club in New Kensington, and in California he was the Past President of the Lions Club, the Hungry Club and the Rotary Club.

 

In addition to his parents Norman was preceded in death by his first wife Judith Brutout Hunt, (1981) and two sons, Farley B. Hunt (2004) and Dennis Odgers (2008).

 

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 28 years, Judith Lewis Hunt; two daughters. Carrie Hunt Kennedy and husband Mark of Washington, PA and Lisa Hunt Buday and husband Jeffrey, of California PA and daughter-in-law, Melissa Odgers of Hanahan, SC.  Also survving are four grandchildren,  Zachary Buday, Elek Buday, Jason Odgers,  and Jennie Hathorne; great-grandsons, Tyler and Henry Odgers and great- granddaughter , Alyssa Driggers.

 

Friends will be received in the United Christian Church, 499 East Malden Drive, Coal Center, PA 15423 on Monday, January 30 from 2-8 pm, on Tuesday from 2-8 pm and on Wednesday until 11:00 am, the hour of service with Rev. David Chafin and Rev. Thaddeus Allen officiating.  Eulogy by Rev. Dr. Darwin Collins.

 

Interment will follow in Howe Cemetery, Long Branch, PA.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Mariscotti Funeral Home, Inc., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth Street, California, PA.
