William “Chud” P. Cairns Jr., age 65, of California, PA, passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2025, with his devoted sisters and loving family by his side.
Born on February 24, 1960, in California, PA, Chud was a lifelong resident of the town he cherished. He graduated from California High School and remained a proud member of the community throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grace B. Cairns and William P. Cairns Sr.
Chud was also preceded in death by his beloved brothers-in-law, Jack Harris and Dave Pagac, with whom he shared a deep bond and countless cherished memories. Together with his sisters, they spent many happy hours filled with laughter, conversation, and the kind of genuine connection that only close family can bring.
Chud is survived by his loving sisters, Debbie Harris and Diane Pagac, who were constant sources of support and care. He was a beloved uncle to Christa Kuvinka (Bruce Kearns), Larry Butler (Melissa), Brianne Hall (Bill), and Megan Livengood (Craig). He was also a cherished great-uncle to Aaron Previsky, Jordan Kearns, Hailey Butler, Gavin Butler, Grayson Butler, Bella Messer, Abigail Livengood, and Hannah Livengood. Chud is also survived by his beloved dog and devoted companion, Dexter, who never left his side.
Chud dedicated much of his working life to Gutman Oil, where he built strong relationships and a reputation for hard work and dependability. He later continued his career with Matheson Tri-Gas, where he proudly finished his professional journey before retiring.
Chud will be remembered for his light-hearted, fun-loving, and easygoing spirit. He had a gift for making people smile and a heart that never hesitated to show up for those he loved. Whether it was cheering from the sidelines at a ball game or supporting a school activity, he was always present in the lives of his nieces and nephews.
A die-hard and lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Chud loved the black and gold and rarely missed a game. His passion for the team was a defining part of who he was.
Chud was also blessed with a lifelong group of devoted friends who were a constant presence in his life. Their loyalty, laughter, and shared memories meant the world to him. Through every season of life, their bond never wavered, and they remained an important source of joy, support, and companionship.
Chud fought a brave and strong battle with ALS, facing each day with courage and grace, and smiling until the very end. In honor of his strength and spirit, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the ALS Association in his memory, to support continued research and care for others living with the disease. Family will receive friends in the Mariscotti Funeral Home, Inc., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 4th Street, California, PA 15419 on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, from 11 am to 1 pm. When funeral services will begin at 1 PM, with the Rev. Dr. Grafton Eliason, officiating.
Interment will follow in Lafayette Memorial Park, Briar Hill, PA.
